Photography is a lifelong passion and pursuit for Bernhard Sperling that started with photography classes in High School including extensive darkroom work. The required assignments led to further autodidactic study and became a lifelong learning and experimenting process, that is at the heart of his photography.

This ceaseless curiosity is not limited to technical and aesthetic aspects but extends to his subjects, persons, activities, places or cultures. For him photography is a process to come to a better and more intimate understanding of slices of our world.

He studied mathematics and a combined course of economics, IT science and management in his hometown Karlsruhe. He joined the banking industry and worked in Germany, India, The Netherlands, Singapore, Czech Republic and then 11 years as banking regulator in the UAE. In 2017 he founded a boutique consultancy for private equity.
He worked as assistant for Mike Kelley, who pioneered layered capture techniques, Ben von Wong who’s large scale production shoots include a multitude of surreal effects, Eric Kim who has an intimate and personal approach to street photography and street portraits and Nick Fancher, who is a likeminded spirit in pushing photographic boundaries.

He endeavors to deliver highest professional standards in his photography, while professional assignments are only occasionally accepted. The commercial assignments are mainly centered around portraits, fashion and lifestyle, including several long-term co-operations with artists and fashion designers. One of his specialties is capturing artwork, that cannot be satisfactorily captured with traditional techniques, in a multi-layer capture technique.

Bernhard Sperling is an early member and avid contributor to the Analog Photography in the UAE Group. He organizes photo-walks, holds talks and teaches and mentors workshops for analog photography. He took part in the group’s collaboration with Tashkeel during Art Dubai 2018 and the group exhibition.
